In the 1800's Burlington was a thriving shipping port, trading with Quebec to the North and the Eastern Seaboard to the South via the Champlain Canal which connects Lake Champlain to the Hudson River. Burlington's story is fascinating, and for both history buffs and the mildly interested alike, I recommend Vincent E. Feeney's "Burlington: A History of Vermont's Queen City."
