The aluminum sheet is offset from the wall by a 3/4" thick wooden frame which is attached to the back. Yes, isn't the negative space essential? And that's what I was trying to capture in this painting-- the sense of light coming through the leaves, silhouetted against the negative space.

Thank you, Gordon. Please take another look at this painting, because I uploaded another version. I wasn't quite happy with the composition of the last one-- there was an area of negative space that I didn't like, so I painted another. I'm working on yet another right now-- still exploring the composition of the leaf clusters.
